Justice of the Peace
As your local State Member of Parliament I can help you to become a Justice of the Peace (JP).
A JP is someone who is entitled by law to facilitate the swearing of Affidavits (documents sworn on oath and usually used in court proceedings) and Statutory Declarations (documents sworn under the Oath’s Act and used to verify factual material).
Please note that the Attorney General’s Department requires that the appointment must be needed in your employment or through a community-based need (eg. you would need to be an office holder in a community organization where the swearing of Statutory Declarations occurs).
To become a JP you must be nominated by a Member of Parliament.
You must also:
- be at least 18 years of age
- be an Australian Citizen or a person who is entitled to vote in this State (unless exempted by the Minister)
- be of good character
- not be an undischarged bankrupt
- consent to confidential inquiries being made to determine suitability for appointment, including a criminal records check
- establish an employment and/or a community based need for appointment as a Justice of the Peace
- consent to having your full name published on the Justices of the Peace Register.
For inquiries and/or applications please telephone my electorate office on (02) 9981 1111.
